Want More Muscle? Do This After Your Workout

If you’re serious about building muscle, the first thing you should be doing immediately following your workout is slamming a whey protein shake mixed with some carbohydrates and creatine.
Now obviously there are other supplements that you could also take to further enhance your muscle-building but I would consider these to be the bare minimum.
Right after your workout your muscles are like a sponge and they are ready to absorb the protein and carbohydrates you want to feed them.
Ideally you want to mix some simple carbohydrates (sugar) with some medium chain carbohydrates. I don’t think I need to give you any advice where to get sugar from…the trick is to just get some sugar in your body after your workout because if you worked out right your glycogen levels should be really low.
The medium chain carbs are simply to give your body something to burn once it has burned through all the sugar or it has been converted to fat (not likely after a workout). The medium chain carb I recommend is usually found in a lot of protein shakes that are specifically designed for post-workout. Look for maltodextrin on the ingredients label.
Your muscles are made up of water and protein and that’s why you want to supplement with (whey) protein and creatine. I prefer whey protein because it is absorbed the fastest of all the proteins and that’s what you need after a workout - fast absorption.
If you’re not supplementing with protein, you’re wasting your time working out if your goal is to build muscle. Period.
I know some folks that prefer not to take creatine and it’s probably not a necessity but I take it because:
- I can work out harder, longer with it
- It adds 7-10 lbs. on my frame ( I weigh 225 lbs.)
- And it shuttles water into my muscles (remember your muscles are made of protein and…)
If you’re not already supplementing with protein, carbohydrates and creatine after your workout, do it now and see what happens to your body!
